Underglaze decoration is a primary decorative technique used on porcelain, which also refers to this type of porcelain. Before the 1940s, Jingdezhen in China referred to underglaze decoration as “inner painting.” The process involves first using pigments to directly paint designs onto the formed clay body, then applying a colorless transparent glaze or celadon glaze over it, and finally firing it in a kiln at high temperatures in a single firing.
